Bouygues Construction converts Les Gobelins, a former railway station, into an innovative urban logistics hub

The property investment company SEGRO has signed a contract with Bouygues Bâtiment Industrie, a subsidiary of Bouygues Bâtiment France, to restore and redevelop the former Les Gobelins railway station, located near the southeastern perimeter of Paris. By 2025, this historic site will become the first urban logistics hub to build connections within the city.

Project Overview

The SEGRO Paris Les Gobelins Centre will span approximately 75,000 m², divided into around twenty modular units ranging from 1,000 m² to 10,000 m². The facility will offer an intramural logistics solution, seamlessly integrated into the city. Designed by Ateliers 4+, the aim is to create an innovative, sustainable, and responsible space to address the logistics challenges of last-mile delivery in Paris.

Key Objectives

The project has three main goals:

  1. Decarbonising Last-Mile Delivery: Reducing the carbon footprint of deliveries in the city while aligning logistics with environmental goals, particularly those of the Low Emission Zone (LEZ). The project aims to reduce pollution, noise, and disruptions from deliveries and flow management.
  2. Technology and Innovation: Leveraging cutting-edge technologies to offer tailored solutions for businesses, positioning the Les Gobelins site as a hub for research and innovation.
  3. Urban Links: Creating jobs and services for businesses and individuals, enhancing the urban fabric.

Economic and Environmental Benefits

The SEGRO Paris Les Gobelins Centre will mark a new era in urban logistics by combining innovation, sustainability, and environmental responsibility. It was a winning entry in the “Reinventing Paris 2” call for projects. The logistics hub will cater to various sectors, including food, medical, and urban services, with a 500 m² space dedicated to project developers, such as start-ups and academics, to test innovative urban logistics solutions.

A service center located on Rue Tolbiac will also be established for local residents and employees. The center will offer amenities like a bicycle repair shop, community café, concierge service, click-and-collect facility, and a recycling point.

Project Timeline and Construction

Work began in June 2024, with an expected completion time of 12 months, during which the site will undergo complete restructuring and sanitation. Bouygues Bâtiment Industrie has adapted its site logistics to the constraints of a dense urban environment to ensure smooth operations throughout the project.

Statements

William Nippert, CEO of Bouygues Bâtiment Industrie, commented, “We are proud to contribute our expertise and dedication to building infrastructures that improve the quality of urban life. Bouygues Bâtiment Industrie’s know-how is put to good use in ambitious projects such as the redevelopment of the former Les Gobelins station, which is designed not only to optimise last-mile logistics but also to strengthen urban links through the creation of local jobs.”
