Fluor Corporation Secures FEED Contract for Heidelberg Materials’ GeZero Carbon Capture Project

Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) announced its selection for the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) contract for Heidelberg Materials’ GeZero project, a groundbreaking initiative to integrate an industrial-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) solution into its cement production facility in Geseke, Germany. Fluor will recognize the contract value in its Q4 2024 financial results.

A Step Forward in Decarbonization

The GeZero project is a cornerstone of Heidelberg Materials’ strategy to reduce carbon emissions in cement production, utilizing state-of-the-art second-generation Oxyfuel technology to capture 700,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. The captured CO₂ will be transported via pipelines or ships to offshore storage sites in the North Sea, where it will be permanently and safely stored.

Mike Alexander, Group President of Fluor’s Energy Solutions business, highlighted the importance of the initiative:

“GeZero is a flagship project for the decarbonization strategy of Heidelberg Materials, and Fluor is excited to assist with this pioneering technology. Carbon capture and permanent storage is crucial in meeting sustainability goals.”

Scope and Timeline

Fluor will lead the design integration of multiple decarbonization technologies at the Geseke cement production site.

  • Construction Start: 2026
  • Commissioning: Scheduled for 2029

Impact and Innovation

This project reflects a significant advancement in industrial decarbonization, addressing one of the most carbon-intensive sectors globally. By implementing advanced CCS technology, Heidelberg Materials is setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in the cement industry.
