Arup and Equatic Collaborate to Advance Large-Scale Ocean Carbon Removal Facility

Arup is partnering with Equatic, a pioneering leader in carbon dioxide removal (CDR), to support the scale-up of the world’s first large-scale ocean carbon removal facility. The partnership combines Equatic’s innovative electrolytic technology with Arup’s global technical expertise to advance climate action.

Equatic’s Groundbreaking Technology

Equatic has developed a patented electrolytic process that leverages the vast capacity of the oceans to absorb and store carbon dioxide. The process accelerates the ocean’s natural carbon removal ability while producing carbon-negative hydrogen, offering a dual benefit of permanent atmospheric CO₂ removal and clean energy production.

Their technology involves a modular design housed within processing plants, enabling flexible deployment and streamlined operations for large-scale impact.

Arup’s Role in Scaling Equatic’s Vision

Arup is providing critical technical and advisory services to Equatic, including:

  • Site and infrastructure assessments to identify optimal deployment locations.
  • Planning and permitting guidance for smooth implementation.
  • Stakeholder management and governance to navigate global partnerships.
  • Development of digital tools to support system operations and expansion.

Arup’s involvement also extends to strategic leadership, with Dervilla Mitchell, former Deputy Chair of Arup Group, serving on Equatic’s Industry Advisory Board to offer insights into sustainable engineering practices.

Progress and Future Impact

Building on the success of pilot plants in California and Singapore, Equatic is now constructing a demonstration plant in Singapore, set to become operational in 2024. This modular approach allows for scalable and cost-effective deployment.

Equatic’s first commercial-scale facility, expected to launch within the decade, will achieve the following milestones:

  • Removal of 100,000+ tons of CO₂ annually from the atmosphere.
  • Production of 3,600 tons of green hydrogen per year.
  • Achieve a CDR cost of less than $100 per ton by 2030.

Ambition for Gigaton-Scale Impact

Equatic aims to reduce global emissions on a gigaton scale, contributing to the fight against climate change by providing scalable, cost-effective carbon removal solutions.
