Balfour Beatty, in collaboration with Technip Energies, GE Vernova, and Shell Catalysts & Technologies, has received the official “Notice to Proceed” from NZT Power Limited for the full Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for the Onshore Power, Capture, and Compression system at the Net Zero Teesside Power project. This marks a major step forward in what is set to become the world’s first gas-fired power station with integrated carbon capture and storage (CCS). The project aligns with the UK’s ambitious net-zero targets, following a £21.7 billion pledge from the UK Government for carbon capture initiatives.
The Net Zero Teesside plant aims to capture up to 2 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, which will then be permanently stored by the Northern Endurance Partnership. With a capacity of up to 742 megawatts, it could meet the annual electricity needs of over 1 million UK homes. The plant will play a pivotal role in supporting the UK’s transition to cleaner energy. Balfour Beatty will utilize its deep expertise in civil engineering, ground engineering, and power transmission and distribution to help deliver the plant, which will feature the Canopy by T.ENTM solution powered by Shell’s CANSOLV® CO₂ capture technology, alongside GE Vernova’s advanced 9HA.02 gas turbines.
The project exemplifies collaboration and innovation at scale, with significant potential to set a new benchmark for low-carbon power generation, combining gas and renewable energy. The project will also help create over 3,000 construction jobs and 1,000 operational jobs annually through to 2050, contributing to the UK’s economic and environmental goals. This landmark initiative demonstrates the critical role of CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) technology in decarbonizing power generation and highlights the potential for further developments in the energy transition.
