EKFB, a joint venture consisting of Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction, and BAM Nuttall, has been awarded Platinum status by the Supply Chain Sustainability School (SCSS) for its sustainability efforts on the HS2 project. This prestigious recognition comes after the company implemented its DIGITAL Earthworks programme (known as DIGGER), which uses real-time data from 700 earthmoving machines to streamline earthmoving processes, reduce fuel consumption, cut unnecessary vehicle movements, and lower carbon emissions.
The DIGGER system has already saved over £25 million for the project by optimizing operations across 80km of the HS2 line, particularly focusing on the earthmoving and cuttings process. The system uses telemetry data to monitor the performance of earthmoving equipment, such as graders, dozers, loading shovels, compactors, trucks, and excavators. It also tracks anti-idling performance, improving both fuel efficiency and worker safety by reducing exposure to harmful black carbon emissions. These advancements contribute to improving both environmental sustainability and productivity at the same time.
As part of its commitment to sustainability, EKFB has implemented eco-friendly practices that also benefit the local community by improving air quality and reducing emissions. The system supports real-time decision-making regarding load optimization, improving operator training, and resolving site road inefficiencies, which further enhances the efficiency and environmental footprint of the project.
In addition to the DIGGER system, EKFB has improved its supply chain management and worked on embedding best practices across its operations, contributing to the project’s Net Zero 2050 goal. The company is also committed to offering e-learning resources and actively sharing sustainability practices throughout its supply chain, leading to an overall improvement in the industry’s environmental standards.
The Platinum status awarded to EKFB is a testament to the company’s efforts to exceed expectations in reducing carbon emissions. This achievement follows EKFB’s progression from Bronze to Gold status in the previous two years, with EKFB now becoming the first HS2 contractor to achieve the highest level of Platinum certification in the SCSS. The company has also exceeded the HS2 Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) process targets, making significant reductions in hydrocarbons and tailpipe emissions, which further aligns with the UK government’s commitment to Net Zero emissions by 2050.
In its section of the HS2 project, EKFB is responsible for moving 60.5 million cubic metres of rock and earth. The DIGITAL Earthworks programme plays a crucial role in ensuring vehicle movements are as efficient as possible while reducing the carbon footprint of the HS2 construction project. This programme is part of a broader industry movement that aims to drive innovation and collaboration toward more sustainable construction practices.
