Alberta, Canada – Global renewable energy leader ACCIONA Energía has officially commenced commercial operations at Forty Mile Wind Farm, a landmark 280-megawatt project in Alberta that now ranks among Canada’s ten largest wind energy installations. The development represents ACCIONA Energía’s most ambitious wind project in North America to date.
A Powerhouse of Clean Energy
Equipped with 49 high-capacity Nordex turbines, each rated at 5.7 MW and mounted on 108-meter towers, the wind farm brings impressive scale and efficiency to Canada’s growing clean energy sector. Forty Mile is projected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 600,000 metric tons annually—a climate benefit comparable to planting 25 million trees each year.
“Forty Mile is more than just a wind farm—it’s a symbol of our long-term commitment to North America’s clean energy future,” said a spokesperson from ACCIONA Energía.
Economic and Social Impact
Beyond its environmental contributions, Forty Mile is also a significant economic catalyst for the southeastern Alberta region:
- 200+ construction jobs were created at peak development.
- 25 full-time positions will support long-term operations and maintenance.
- CAD $133 million in lifetime property tax revenues will fund local public services.
- Financial contributions are supporting nonprofits like:
- Bow Island Food Bank
- Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub
- Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society
These commitments reflect ACCIONA Energía’s community-first approach to renewable energy development.
Reinforcing a Growing North American Footprint
With the completion of Forty Mile, ACCIONA Energía now operates 3.45 GW of renewable capacity across North America, spanning wind, solar, CSP (concentrated solar power), and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
“For two decades, we’ve been expanding our clean energy portfolio in North America. Forty Mile takes that legacy to the next level,” the company emphasized.
