Active Utilities has strengthened its position as Australia’s largest independent embedded network platform with the acquisition of Real Utilities, the carbon-neutral energy business established by Frasers Property Australia. The deal follows Active’s recent merger with Savant Energy and its acquisition of Watts Energy, marking another major step in the company’s national growth strategy.
Founded in 2017, Real Utilities delivers carbon-neutral energy to more than 3,000 customers across residential, retail, industrial and commercial sectors. With this acquisition, the combined Active Utilities business will manage more than 100,000 meter connection points nationwide, significantly expanding its scale and operational footprint.
The integration of Real Utilities builds on Active’s expanding portfolio of local utility network solutions, including embedded electricity networks, centralised hot water systems and centralised air-conditioning. The combined business also brings enhanced capabilities in EV charging, solar energy, battery storage and other distributed energy solutions, positioning Active to better support multi-tenant buildings and complex developments.
Lisa Dowie, CEO of Active Utilities, said the acquisition reinforces the company’s leadership role in Australia’s energy transition. She noted that both organisations share a strong focus on customer experience and on fairly distributing the value created by local utility networks. She also highlighted that Frasers Property’s investment in embedded renewable energy networks aligns closely with Active’s sustainability-driven strategy.
Both Active Utilities and Real Utilities have strong contracted growth and sales pipelines, which are expected to significantly expand the combined portfolio over the next five years.
For Frasers Property Australia, the divestment aligns with its broader strategy of recycling capital into core development and investment assets along Australia’s eastern seaboard. Anita Hoskins, Chief Financial Officer of Frasers Property Australia and General Manager of Real Utilities, said the business has matured into a strong standalone operation and is well positioned to grow further under a specialist energy provider.
The acquisition underscores the accelerating consolidation within Australia’s embedded energy network sector and highlights the growing demand for carbon-neutral and decentralised utility solutions across residential and commercial developments.
