AECOM Partners with Type One Energy to Deliver Design Engineering for Stellarator Fusion Power Plant

AECOM, the trusted global infrastructure leader, has announced a partnership with Type One Energy to provide preliminary design engineering for the company’s 350MWe Infinity Two stellarator fusion power plant. The facility is intended to supply the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) with secure, reliable, and clean energy, marking a major milestone in the advancement of fusion power technology.

“This first-of-its-kind partnership marks a notable milestone for both companies, as we come together to advance innovative stellarator fusion technology that has the potential to bring affordable and clean energy to communities around the world,” said Frank Sweet, chief executive of AECOM’s global Environment business.

TVA Partnership and Project Scope

On September 19, 2025, TVA issued the world’s first Letter of Intent to construct one or more Infinity Two fusion power plants at its Bull Run site near Knoxville, Tennessee. AECOM and Type One Energy have already begun executing TVA’s initial contract for the project. TVA’s final decision to proceed with construction will depend on the successful completion of project development activities and regulatory approvals.

“This is an exciting time in the fusion energy space,” said Jennifer Obertino, senior vice president of AECOM’s global Energy practice. “Our teams have been working with Type One Energy over the past year, giving us direct experience with their innovative technology and further fueling our excitement in helping bring safe, sustainable, and affordable energy to market.”

Driving the Future of Clean Energy

AECOM is one of the few global infrastructure firms accredited by the United States National Association of Energy Service Companies (NAESCO). With more than 20 years of multidisciplinary expertise, the firm provides the full spectrum of clean energy services, from renewables and alternative fuels to grid modernization and energy efficiency. This collaboration reinforces AECOM’s commitment to helping clients achieve resilient and sustainable outcomes.

Type One Energy, founded in 2019, is led by a team of globally recognized fusion scientists and energy industry veterans. Through its FusionDirect program, the company is pursuing the lowest-risk and shortest-schedule path to commercial fusion power, applying advanced manufacturing, computational physics, and high-field superconducting magnets to accelerate development.

A Step Toward Fusion Energy at Scale

By combining AECOM’s global infrastructure expertise with Type One Energy’s cutting-edge stellarator technology, the partnership represents a significant stride toward achieving commercial fusion power. Once complete, the Infinity Two plant could supply 350MWe of clean, decarbonized energy, supporting TVA’s long-term sustainability and resilience goals while serving as a model for future fusion facilities worldwide.
