Almería High-Speed Rail Project Wins “Best Andalusian Public Works of 2025”

Almería, Spain – A transformative step toward connecting southeastern Spain to the broader European rail network has earned the Pulpí–Vera high-speed railway section the prestigious title of “Best Andalusian Public Works of 2025”. The accolade was awarded by the Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla branch of the Association of Civil Engineers, highlighting the project’s engineering excellence and regional impact.

The award recognizes the joint efforts of infrastructure giants ACCIONA and Ferrovial, who led the design and construction of this strategic stretch of the Mediterranean Corridor. Representing the consortium, José Manuel Álvarez, project manager of the joint venture (UTE), accepted the honor during a formal ceremony in Granada.

Reconnecting Almería: A Strategic Milestone

The project’s broader objective is to end Almería’s historical railway isolation, integrating it into Spain’s high-speed network and enhancing freight and passenger movement across Andalusia and Europe. Backed by ADIF (Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias), the initiative forms part of Spain’s national vision to strengthen the Mediterranean Corridor—a trans-European transport network of critical importance.

The civil engineers’ association applauded ADIF’s unwavering focus on regional development through high-impact infrastructure.

“This project is more than tracks and tunnels—it’s a gateway to opportunity, connecting Almería to major logistics hubs and propelling long-term economic growth,” noted an association spokesperson.

Engineering Excellence: The Pulpí–Vera Section

The awarded section covers over 25 kilometers between Pulpí and Vera, combining robust engineering with sustainable infrastructure development:

  • 20 km of single-track platform
  • 5 km of double track
  • 10 viaducts, 9 overpasses, 20 subways, and 6 artificial tunnels

The diverse terrain required complex geotechnical and structural solutions, all designed to support high-speed rail standards.

Looking Ahead: High-Speed Vision for Southern Spain

This recognition adds to the growing momentum around the Mediterranean Corridor, a key priority in both Spanish and EU transportation agendas. By reducing travel times, increasing freight efficiency, and boosting tourism potential, the corridor is expected to bring substantial returns in economic growth, sustainability, and regional equity.

A Symbol of Progress

The Pulpí–Vera section is not only a technical feat—it is also a symbol of Andalusia’s ambitions for modern, inclusive infrastructure. As Spain continues to invest in high-speed rail, the success of this project stands as an inspiring model of collaborative execution, regional development, and engineering ingenuity.
