Antwerp, Belgium — Arcadis, the international design and consultancy firm, has been commissioned by the Department of Mobility and Public Works, Maritime Access Division, to carry out the full study assignment for the E34-West Mobility Project. The initiative aims to enhance transport infrastructure between Waaslandhaven and the R2, strengthening the economic role of the Port of Antwerp while improving mobility, sustainability, and quality of life in the region.
Waaslandhaven, located on the left bank of the Scheldt, is a critical hub within the Port of Antwerp — Belgium’s economic engine. To ensure future-proof accessibility, the E34-West Mobility Project introduces new infrastructure that separates port traffic from local traffic, improves interchanges, and integrates sustainable mobility solutions such as the F41 cycle highway, tunnels, and bridges.
Sustainability is central to the project, with designs that respect the polder area’s landscape and ecology, address water management, and reduce flood risks. The plan also includes a green buffer dike and reed canal to harmonize infrastructure with nature.
Arcadis brings a multidisciplinary approach, utilizing BIM, GIS, and integrated cost management tools to deliver efficiency and innovation. Partnering with OMGEVING for landscape design and Createlli for environmental management, Arcadis combines technical expertise with ecological sensitivity.
Lieve Neirynck, BA Director Mobility Belgium at Arcadis, said:
“This project is not only vital for Waaslandhaven and its connection to the E34 but also enhances regional quality of life. With strong cycling networks, sustainable infrastructure, and landscape integration, we are creating harmony between economy, mobility, and ecology.”
The project is also integral to the Extra Container Capacity Antwerp (ECA) program, reinforcing the port’s position as a global trade hub.
