ArcelorMittal Relies on Liebherr Crane Technology for Decarbonisation Project in Spain

ArcelorMittal has selected Liebherr’s 1188 EC-H Fibre high-top crane for the construction of a new electric arc furnace at its Gijón plant in Spain, marking the first use of this advanced model in the country. This installation plays a crucial role in the company’s European decarbonisation strategy, contributing significantly to reducing CO₂ emissions in steel production.

First Liebherr 1188 EC-H Fibre Crane Deployed in Spain

The Liebherr 1188 EC-H Fibre features cutting-edge fibre rope technology, enabling:

  • Higher lifting capacities
  • Up to four times the service life of conventional steel rope
  • Reduced maintenance and easier handling

This makes it ideal for complex industrial projects like the Gijón furnace, which is being constructed within an active steel plant and under tight spatial and safety constraints.

“The use of fibre technology allows us to handle maximum loads over longer distances,” said Senén Fernández, Managing Director of Gruisa.

Sustainability, Efficiency and Safety in One Crane

The crane’s 90-metre maximum radius and 9-tonne capacity at full outreach ensure excellent performance even in confined spaces. The integrated Litronic control system includes:

  • Load swing damping
  • Micro-positioning capabilities
  • A modern 12-inch touchscreen for intuitive adjustments

These features enable safe, smooth, and highly precise movements, even near ongoing plant operations.

Collaboration Ensures Project Success

The project is a collaborative effort between Gruisa, Liebherr Ibérica, and the Liebherr Tower Crane Solutions team, who worked together on:

  • Crane planning and assembly
  • Operator support
  • Technical consultation under high safety standards

“Liebherr is always one step ahead when it comes to cutting-edge technologies tailored to today’s construction needs,” Fernández added.

Supporting Europe’s Green Steel Vision

This deployment is part of ArcelorMittal’s larger commitment to green steel production. The Gijón furnace and its supporting infrastructure reflect the company’s investment in cleaner technology and innovative logistics, helping drive a sustainable future for the steel industry.
