Arup Strengthens Leadership to Streamline Environmental Approvals for Australia’s Energy Transition

Global sustainable design and engineering firm Arup has strengthened its leadership team in Australia to accelerate environmental approvals for major infrastructure and renewable energy projects, supporting the nation’s transition toward a decarbonised future.

Under the new title of Strategic Market Lead – Renewable Energy and Environment, David Carberry and Jon Williamson will lead efforts to improve environmental assessment processes and strengthen Arup’s capacity to deliver complex, sustainability-focused projects.

“Improving the environmental approvals process brings us closer to a decarbonised digital future—one that depends on essential infrastructure such as data centres, sustainable water management, and advanced transmission systems,” said Liam O’Donohue, Arup’s Managing Principal for Australia & New Zealand.

O’Donohue added that Arup sees significant economic opportunities emerging from the global energy transition and that enhancing expertise in environmental approvals is central to the firm’s regional growth strategy.

Experienced Leaders in Renewable Energy Approvals

David Carberry, based in Brisbane, brings over 30 years of experience in renewable energy impact assessment and approvals, having led numerous solar, wind, pumped hydro, and battery storage projects across Queensland and New South Wales. His deep understanding of planning processes enables him to identify innovative pathways that strengthen projects while balancing environmental and social outcomes.

Jon Williamson, based in Sydney, contributes 25 years of experience in major project management, environmental approvals, engineering design, and stakeholder engagement across renewable energy and infrastructure sectors. Known for his collaborative approach, Williamson works closely with regulators and communities to refine projects early, reducing environmental risks and enhancing overall project viability.

“The combined expertise David and Jon bring to environmental impact assessments and renewable development will be invaluable as Arup continues to drive innovation and deliver positive outcomes for clients and communities,” O’Donohue said.

Supporting Australia’s Net Zero Ambitions

As Australia’s state and federal governments set more ambitious emissions reduction targets, Arup’s expanded leadership reinforces its commitment to helping clients navigate environmental regulations efficiently and sustainably.

“As new government targets accelerate the race to net zero, the private sector must invest in skills and innovation to remain competitive,” O’Donohue concluded. “These appointments reflect our commitment to investing in green opportunities and shaping a better, more sustainable future.”
