Balfour Beatty Reaches Agreement on the Sale of Omnicom to Hitachi Rail

Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, has announced an agreement to sell Omnicom, its specialist rail measurement hardware and intelligent software business, to Hitachi Rail, a global leader in transportation solutions.

Strategic Growth and Global Reach

This acquisition aligns with Omnicom’s growth strategy, enabling the company to expand beyond the UK and into the US and European markets. Under Hitachi Rail’s ownership, Omnicom will leverage its advanced technology and expertise to enhance rail infrastructure and monitoring capabilities globally.

Mick Rayner, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s UK Rail business, stated:

“In order to capitalize on its unique technological solutions to the Rail market, Omnicom requires an owner with a truly global reach and a complementary culture. Hitachi’s acquisition will further enable Omnicom to apply its expertise in the rail and digital technology sectors in both the US and European markets.”

Omnicom’s Cutting-Edge Solutions

Over the past decade, Omnicom has grown its capabilities through both acquisitions and organic development. Its team of over 100 experts has developed AI-enabled technology, combined with robust hardware and software, to monitor and manage rail infrastructure. This technology, currently used by customers such as Network Rail and London Underground, ensures operational stability and predictive maintenance, helping prevent railway asset failures.

Sanjay Razdan, Managing Director of Omnicom, added:

“This acquisition strengthens Omnicom’s ability to collaborate, innovate and deliver AI-enabled systems and services whilst further enhancing the safety, efficiency, and reliability of rail infrastructure.”

Hitachi Rail’s Vision

For Hitachi Rail, this acquisition strengthens its digital asset management capabilities and enhances its global offerings. By integrating Omnicom’s pioneering track monitoring tools into its HMAX platform, Hitachi Rail aims to optimize rail services and infrastructure, showcasing the transformative potential of AI in railway systems.

Giuseppe Marino, CEO of Hitachi Rail, commented:

“This is a strategic acquisition for Hitachi Rail. Plugging Omnicom’s pioneering track monitoring tools into our digital asset management platform will further strengthen our global offer to optimize customers’ rail services and the surrounding infrastructure.”

Balfour Beatty’s Continued Rail Focus

Balfour Beatty will continue to concentrate on its core UK Rail business, which focuses on managing, enhancing, and maintaining thousands of miles of rail infrastructure. This effort remains crucial for connecting communities and supporting economic growth across the UK. With a workforce of over 1,600 employees, Balfour Beatty remains a trusted partner in delivering rail services across the asset lifecycle, including electrification, track, power, signalling, and railway systems.

Next Steps

Balfour Beatty plans to make a further announcement upon the completion of the sale. This move marks a significant milestone in Balfour Beatty’s strategy to focus on its strengths while enabling Omnicom to thrive under Hitachi Rail’s global leadership.
