Bechtel to Build 430 MW Cold Creek Solar and Storage Project in Texas

Bechtel has been selected by Doral Renewables to design and build the Cold Creek Solar+Storage project in Schleicher and Tom Green counties, Texas, strengthening the state’s clean energy capacity and grid reliability. The large-scale renewable facility will deliver approximately 430 megawatts (MW) of solar power to the Texas electricity grid.

The Cold Creek project will feature more than 850,000 solar modules alongside a 340 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system. The integrated storage component will capture surplus solar energy generated during daylight hours and dispatch it during periods of peak demand, improving grid flexibility and resilience within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) system.

Bechtel will provide full engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for the project. Engineering work is already underway, with commercial operations expected to begin in 2028.

Scott Austin, General Manager of Renewables & Clean Power at Bechtel, said the project reflects the strength of Texas’s diversified energy strategy. By combining large-scale solar generation with battery storage, the Cold Creek facility will support long-term grid stability while delivering reliable, homegrown clean energy to Texas consumers.

For Doral Renewables, the Cold Creek development represents a key milestone in the company’s growth. Jason Van Deusen, Vice President of Project Management at Doral Renewables, highlighted the continued partnership with Bechtel, noting that collaboration, safety, quality, workforce participation, and environmental stewardship remain central to the project’s success.

At peak construction, the Cold Creek Solar+Storage project is expected to create more than 500 jobs, generating training opportunities and boosting economic activity across the region. Once operational, the facility will play a significant role in supporting Texas’s expanding renewable energy portfolio while enhancing grid reliability for years to come.
