Cemex announced major progress on its sustainability and community initiatives at the Balcones Cement Plant and Quarry, highlighting new achievements in biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and inclusive community engagement.
At the center of these efforts is the Cemex Nature Center, a 33-acre open space designed as a hub for biodiversity and learning. The site features:
- A restored prairie ecosystem with over 130 native plant species
- Pollinator gardens, vegetable gardens, and a greenhouse
- More than 25 honeybee hives
- Habitat enhancements, including Purple Martin hotels, Eastern Bluebird houses, and nesting boxes across natural savannah trails
Inclusive Community Programs
Through a partnership with United Way’s PEACE program, Cemex operates a wheelchair-accessible vegetable garden that empowers adults with special needs. In 2024, participants harvested 4,064 pounds of produce, donating it to local shelters. A community fundraiser tied to the program attracted 200+ attendees, strengthening local ties.
The site’s greenhouse also cultivated and donated over 4,500 native trees to regional organizations in 2024, supporting reforestation and habitat restoration.
Hands-On Education
Cemex’s Balcones Dry Comal Creek Wildlife Habitat Center continues to engage employees, students, and community members. It is expected to involve around 1,500 participants annually through workshops, field visits, and interactive learning sessions.
Commitment to Sustainability
Cemex emphasized that its Balcones operations reflect a broader strategy to embed biodiversity, conservation, and social responsibility into core business practices. Future plans include expanding both biodiversity projects and educational programs to strengthen the company’s role as a community partner.
