Doosan Enerbility Strengthens Nuclear Cooperation with Candu Energy, Becomes First Non-Canadian Preferred Vendor

Doosan Enerbility has announced its selection as a preferred vendor for Canadian nuclear specialist Candu Energy, marking a historic first for a non-Canadian company. The agreement represents a major milestone in international nuclear cooperation, positioning Doosan to take part in both upgrading existing heavy-water reactor facilities and contributing to new nuclear power plant construction projects globally.

The signing ceremony took place at Lotte Hotel Seoul and was attended by key executives from both companies, including Gary Rose, President of Candu Energy, and Jongdoo Kim, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Nuclear Business Group.

Candu Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AtkinsRéalis, is the owner of CANDU heavy-water reactor technology—used in 31 reactors currently operating across Canada, South Korea, Romania, China, and Argentina. Out of 2,000 suppliers initially reviewed, Doosan Enerbility emerged as the only non-Canadian firm among nine shortlisted preferred vendors.

This agreement enables Doosan to contribute across all major phases of international nuclear projects, including design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, and operations. The collaboration also supports Candu Energy’s global push for its next-generation CANDU MONARK 1,000MW reactor, launched in 2023.

“CANDU technology has proven its reliability across four continents,” said Gary Rose, President of Candu Energy. “We’re proud to welcome Doosan Enerbility as a global partner to support our projects, especially in the Asian region.”

“Being selected as a preferred vendor by Candu Energy is a strong testament to the global competitiveness of Korea’s nuclear industry,” added Jongdoo Kim of Doosan Enerbility. “We look forward to supporting both Candu’s reactor upgrade projects and their nuclear new build pipeline.”

Doosan Enerbility has already demonstrated its capabilities in this field, having previously secured orders from Candu Energy to supply feeder pipes for Romania’s Cernavoda Unit 1 and for Canada’s Pickering B reactors.

This landmark partnership further reinforces Doosan Enerbility’s status as a global leader in nuclear innovation and supply chain excellence, particularly in the field of heavy-water reactor technologies.
