Doosan Enerbility to Build 14MW Wind Turbine Nacelle Facility in Changwon

Doosan Enerbility is taking a significant step forward in advancing Korea’s offshore wind capabilities, announcing the construction of a nacelle assembly facility for Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy’s 14MW offshore wind turbines.

On March 11, the two companies signed an Early Works Agreement (EWA) at Doosan Enerbility’s headquarters in Changwon, marking the start of the execution phase in their strategic partnership formed in 2022. The agreement sets the stage for Doosan to design and build a state-of-the-art nacelle manufacturing facility tailored for the next generation of high-capacity wind turbines.

Key attendees at the signing ceremony included Yohan Yun, SVP of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Sales & Marketing; Kwangyol Lee, SVP of Engineering & Production; and Falk Mehdorn, COO of Nacelles at Siemens Gamesa.

“With the signing of this EWA, we will now be able to take our partnership, which was forged based on mutual trust, one step further toward actual implementation,” said Seungwoo Sohn, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group. “Using the synergy created from our partnership, we aim to not only promote the domestic offshore wind ecosystem, but also contribute to the expansion of carbon-free energy.”

Doosan Enerbility will begin design work for the facility and production systems at its existing Changwon plant, while Siemens Gamesa will provide technical support, knowledge transfer, and workforce training to help build Doosan’s nacelle assembly capabilities.

“Our collaboration with Doosan Enerbility has played a significant role in securing a robust project pipeline for us in Korea,” said Falk Mehdorn of Siemens Gamesa. “Doosan is a strong and reliable partner, helping us effectively enter the Korean offshore wind market. We are excited to exchange knowledge and work together on implementing our 14MW turbines off the Korean coast.”

Powering Korea’s Offshore Wind Ambitions

Siemens Gamesa, a global offshore wind leader and part of Siemens Energy, has delivered 28GW of offshore turbines globally. Doosan Enerbility, active in wind energy since 2005, holds the largest track record among Korean offshore wind turbine suppliers.

The new facility in Changwon will serve as a production hub for nacelles — the core component of offshore turbines — for major upcoming projects. These include:

  • Yawol Offshore Wind Farm (104MW) — Doosan Enerbility selected as preferred bidder.
  • Anma Offshore Wind 1 (224MW) and Anma Offshore Wind 2 (308MW) — Siemens Gamesa preferred bidder.
  • Bandibuli (Firefly) Floating Offshore Wind Farm (750MW) — Siemens Gamesa preferred bidder.

All nacelles for Siemens Gamesa’s Korea-based projects will be assembled at Doosan’s facility, fostering local production and strengthening Korea’s renewable energy value chain.
