Berlin, Germany — Eiffage, through its German subsidiary SEH Engineering (part of Eiffage Métal), has secured a major contract to build the new Levensau Bridge over the Kiel Canal in northern Germany. The project will be delivered in consortium with BEMO Tunnelling and Metrostav DIZ, with a total contract value of €183 million, of which €82 million corresponds to Eiffage’s share.
The existing Levensau Bridge is the oldest bridge still spanning the Kiel Canal, the world’s busiest artificial waterway and a vital artery for both the regional economy and the European transportation network. Due to its age and the need to increase clearance for larger vessels, authorities decided to replace the structure entirely.
The new bridge will measure 241 metres in length and 42 metres in height, with a total steel weight of approximately 10,000 tonnes. Its steel superstructure will feature prominent arches and will be manufactured at SEH Engineering’s facilities in Hanover, Germany, as well as Metrostav DIZ’s plants in Prague, Czech Republic. Civil engineering works will be carried out by BEMO Tunnelling.
The bridge is scheduled to open to rail traffic in autumn 2027, followed by access for road vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians a few months later.
This latest win follows other recent Eiffage Métal contracts in Magdeburg, Mülheim, and Leverkusen, reinforcing the Group’s strong position in the German steel engineering structures market. Supported by Germany’s infrastructure renovation recovery plan, Eiffage continues to benefit from robust activity and a strong order book in the country.
