Phu My, Vietnam — Baria Serece has strengthened its port operations with the installation of an electric Liebherr LPS 550 rail-mounted portal crane, delivering major improvements in bulk cargo handling at Phu My Port.
The LPS 550 combines a 144-tonne lifting capacity, a 48-metre boom, and a high-voltage electric drive, enabling the terminal to handle up to 1,250 tonnes per hour during peak performance tests. The crane also includes a diesel backup system to ensure continued operations during power interruptions.
High-Performance Bulk Handling
Designed for high-intensity agribulk and fertiliser operations, the new crane features a four-rope grab system, hydrostatic drive technology and strong structural stability, allowing safe and efficient handling even under challenging weather conditions.
Crane operators benefit from:
- High-visibility cabins
- Integrated digital display systems
- Advanced camera technologies
These features support precision and safety during complex loading and unloading cycles.
Supporting Growing Cargo Volumes
Phu My Port handles nearly 7 million metric tonnes of cargo annually. In its first year of service, the LPS 550 logged 4,000 operating hours, often working up to 22 hours per day—highlighting its critical role in ensuring continuous port operations.
With two berths totalling 620 metres and the ability to receive vessels up to 100,000 DWT, the efficiency upgrades provided by the LPS 550 directly reduce vessel turnaround times, benefiting all port customers.
Space-Efficient Design for Narrow Quays
The crane’s portal undercarriage allows it to move on rails while leaving space below for trucks and service vehicles—an essential advantage for narrow quaysides. Its design supports:
- Uninterrupted cargo flow
- Direct integration with conveyor lines
- Reduced re-handling and quay congestion
Long-Standing Partnership
Baria Serece previously operated five Liebherr TCC 300 cranes, reflecting a long and trusted collaboration with Liebherr for reliable cargo handling solutions.
Expert Insight
“Engineering decisions at Baria Serece were driven by space, cycle time and reliability,” said Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales Mobile Harbour Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH. “The rail-mounted portal crane provides the stability and speed the terminal needs without limiting landside logistics.”
A Step Forward for Vietnam’s Trade Growth
The new crane supports Vietnam’s expanding trade volumes by improving handling performance for agribulk, fertilisers and general cargo, while maintaining a compact quay footprint.
