Geisinger Wyoming Valley Expansion: A New Era

Geisinger Wyoming Valley Expansion: A New Era

Turner Construction Company has begun vertical construction on the $900 million expansion of Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, marking a significant milestone in one of the largest healthcare infrastructure projects in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

The project will significantly expand healthcare capacity and modernize medical facilities for the region. Steel is now rising on the 11-story, 600,000-square-foot patient tower, following several years of planning and foundation work.

Major Healthcare Expansion Underway

When completed, the new tower will dramatically increase the hospital’s capacity and services. The structure will contain more steel than the Eiffel Tower, highlighting the scale of the project.

Key features of the Geisinger Wyoming Valley expansion include:

  • Bed capacity increase: from 356 to 500 beds
  • Operating rooms: expanding from 12 to 18
  • Expanded emergency department facilities
  • All private patient rooms to improve patient comfort and care
  • 600,000 square feet of new healthcare space

The new patient tower is expected to open in the first quarter of 2028.

Supporting Regional Healthcare Access

According to David Kaminski, Vice President and Senior General Manager at Turner Construction Company, the project represents a major step toward improving healthcare access for communities across the region.

The expansion will enable Geisinger to deliver advanced medical services comparable to those offered by large academic medical centers in major metropolitan areas.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

Beyond healthcare improvements, the project is expected to provide a substantial economic boost to the region.

Projected impacts include:

  • Up to 3,800 construction jobs supported during the project
  • Workforce growth from 150 workers to about 450 at peak construction
  • Approximately $1 billion in local economic impact
  • 400 new permanent jobs expected once the facility is operational

These investments will strengthen both the regional healthcare system and the local economy.

Building on a Long-Standing Medical Campus

Originally opened in 1981, the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center campus has expanded multiple times to meet the growing healthcare needs of the community.

The new patient tower represents the largest expansion in the hospital’s history, ensuring that residents across Northeastern Pennsylvania have access to modern facilities, advanced medical technology, and expanded patient care services for decades to come.
