Green Light for Augsburg State Theatre Upgrade by HENN

Augsburg, Germany — The Augsburg city council has officially approved the new architectural plans for the Staatstheater Augsburg, marking a major step forward in the transformation of this historic cultural landmark. Designed by HENN, the project aims to merge history with innovation, creating a future-ready cultural hub rooted in tradition yet embracing modern design and sustainability.

Reviving a 19th-Century Landmark

Originally constructed in the 19th century, the listed building will now undergo renovation along with the construction of two new structures. The design seeks to preserve the theatre’s heritage while offering modern performance spaces for artists and visitors.

  • Grosses Haus (Large House): completion scheduled for 2029
  • Kleines Haus (Small House): to be delivered one year early — end of 2029
  • Operations building: to be completed in 2030

A Fusion of Tradition and Technology

The architectural approach continues earlier concepts while introducing fresh design strategies, especially for the Kleines Haus. The goal is to create a future-proof cultural space that opens to the city — inviting both artists and the public to interact.

Striking Design Features

  • Sleek, semi-transparent recycled glass façade
  • Curvilinear forms echoing the existing theater architecture
  • A “shop window” concept that connects theatre life to the city
  • At night, the Kleines Haus illuminates from within, creating a glowing cultural landmark

The glass façade, sourced from regional recycled materials, wraps around the stone base like a theatrical curtain — symbolizing the integration of past and present.

A Cultural Beacon for Augsburg

The redesigned Staatstheater Augsburg will serve as a creative field of experimentation, bringing together the community, artists, and passersby. The project demonstrates how sustainable, high-tech architecture can shape the cultural identity of a city while honoring its legacy.
