Heidelberg Materials Expands Canadian Footprint with BURNCO Acquisition in Edmonton

Heidelberg Materials North America has announced a binding purchase agreement to acquire the assets of BURNCO Rock Products Ltd in Edmonton, Alberta. The move significantly expands the company’s footprint in Canada, reinforcing its Strategy 2030 growth vision and strengthening its market position in the Northwest region.

BURNCO, a fifth-generation family-owned construction materials supplier, operates across Canada and the U.S. The Edmonton-area acquisition covers:

  • Six aggregates sites
  • Two asphalt plants
  • One bitumen storage terminal
  • Three ready-mixed concrete plants
  • One rail-served cement terminal

The acquisition also brings onboard 200 employees, who will transition to Heidelberg Materials as part of the deal.

A Strategic Growth Move

“With our latest acquisition, we are significantly expanding our aggregates business in an attractive market as we continue on our ambitious growth path in North America,” said Dr. Dominik von Achten, Chairman of the Managing Board of Heidelberg Materials. “Our customers will benefit from an extended network of aggregates and ready-mixed concrete sites, reflecting our disciplined pure-play product strategy as recently outlined in our Strategy 2030.”

Chris Ward, Member of the Managing Board and CEO of Heidelberg Materials North America, added:
“This latest step contributes to the strengthening of our business in Edmonton, and we expect significant synergies for the Northwest region. We look forward to welcoming 200 BURNCO employees and their valued customers to Heidelberg Materials.”

Timeline and Next Steps

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approval, with completion expected by the end of 2025. Both parties have agreed not to disclose financial terms.

Once finalized, the acquisition will further consolidate Heidelberg Materials’ position as a leading supplier of aggregates, ready-mixed concrete, asphalt, and cement solutions in Canada’s rapidly developing markets.
