Heidelberg Materials Secures Four EU Innovation Fund Grants to Drive Decarbonisation

Heidelberg Materials has been selected to receive funding for four major carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) projects under the EU Innovation Fund’s Net-Zero Technologies Call. The grants support innovative technologies that significantly reduce industrial emissions.

The selected projects are:

  • Anthemis (Belgium)
  • AirvaultGOCO₂ (France)
  • DREAM (Italy)
  • HuCCSar (Poland)

Leadership Statements

Dr Dominik von Achten, Chairman of the Managing Board, said this milestone reflects strong trust in the company’s decarbonisation strategy, building on the successes of Brevik CCS and the Padeswood CCS Final Investment Decision.

Jon Morrish, Managing Board Member for Europe, urged governments in France, Belgium, Italy, and Poland to support regulatory frameworks so customers can access evoZero® near-zero carbon products at scale.

Dr Katharina Beumelburg, Chief Sustainability and New Technologies Officer, highlighted that these grants support plants where environmental improvements are already underway and where CCUS is the next crucial step.

Project Highlights

Anthemis, Belgium

  • Installation of an oxyfuel carbon capture unit at the Antoing clinker plant
  • Expected to capture over 95% of emissions
  • More than 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year
  • Includes partnerships to build a full CO₂ transport and storage value chain

AirvaultGOCO₂, France

  • Nearly 1 million tonnes of CO₂ captured yearly at the Airvault plant
  • Part of the wider GOCO₂ industrial decarbonisation initiative
  • CO₂ will be transported via pipeline to Saint-Nazaire and then shipped to storage sites in the North Sea

DREAM, Italy

  • First full-chain, full-scale CCS project for the Italian cement sector
  • Located at the Rezzato Mazzano cement plant (Brescia)
  • Uses a hybrid carbon capture system
  • Will send CO₂ to the Ravenna CCS hub
  • Target: ~1 million tonnes CO₂ captured annually

HuCCSar, Poland

  • Development of Poland’s first onshore CCS value chain
  • Validates CO₂ storage capacity in Central Poland
  • Includes work on community acceptance for onshore storage
  • Could become a model for future CCS partnerships

Broader Context

Before these selections, Heidelberg Materials had already received EU Innovation Fund support for its:

  • ANRAV (Bulgaria)
  • GeZero (Germany)
