Jacobs secures contracts to modernize I-290 corridor with focus on safety, congestion reduction, and long-term resilience
CHICAGO, April 9, 2026 — Jacobs has secured two major contracts to deliver I-290 corridor improvements in Chicago, aiming to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and strengthen long-term infrastructure resilience.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) selected Jacobs to support critical upgrades along the Eisenhower Expressway. This corridor serves more than 200,000 vehicles daily, making it one of the region’s busiest transport routes.
Key projects to support I-290 corridor improvements
First, Jacobs will lead the design and project management for replacing the Indiana Harbor Belt railroad bridge. This upgrade will enable future widening of the I-290 corridor. As a result, traffic flow is expected to improve significantly.
In addition, the company will oversee construction and inspection for a new supplemental storm sewer. This system will run beneath the expressway and strengthen flood resilience. Moreover, engineers will use advanced tunneling methods to complete the work efficiently.
Reducing disruption while improving mobility
Jacobs plans to use accelerated construction staging to limit disruption. This approach is critical because the corridor supports both commuter and freight traffic.
At the same time, the project team will protect essential utilities during construction. Consequently, the upgrades will proceed without major service interruptions.
Focus on safety and long-term resilience
The I-290 corridor improvements in Chicago aim to deliver safer and more reliable travel. The storm sewer installation will reduce flooding risks. Meanwhile, the bridge replacement will support future expansion and capacity growth.
Tom Meinhart, Executive Vice President at Jacobs, said the project reflects an integrated approach.
“By combining transportation, water, and tunneling expertise, we will improve safety, reduce congestion, and strengthen stormwater management,” he said.
Strategic importance of the I-290 corridor
The Eisenhower Expressway plays a vital role in Chicago’s transport network. It connects key urban and suburban areas while supporting regional freight movement.
Therefore, these I-290 corridor improvements are essential for long-term mobility. They also align with broader efforts to modernize U.S. infrastructure systems.
Industry perspective
Jacobs ranks among the top firms in transportation engineering. The company continues to deliver large-scale infrastructure projects across road, rail, and underground networks.
With these new contracts, Jacobs strengthens its role in shaping resilient and connected transport systems in major urban centers.
