I-95 Lake Marion Bridge Project Underway in 2026

Major upgrade to improve safety and capacity on key East Coast transport corridor

April 2026 — Construction has officially begun on the replacement of the Interstate 95 bridges over Lake Marion in South Carolina, marking a major infrastructure upgrade along one of the United States’ busiest highways.

The project is led by the South Carolina Department of Transportation in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Replacing aging bridge infrastructure

The project will replace both the northbound and southbound bridges over Lake Marion.

These structures were originally built in the 1960s. Therefore, they no longer meet modern safety and capacity standards.

In addition, crews will upgrade surrounding road approaches to improve connectivity and traffic flow.

Critical corridor for passenger and freight traffic

Interstate 95 is one of the most important highways on the U.S. East Coast.

It supports:

  • Daily commuter traffic
  • Long-distance travel
  • Freight transportation

As a result, upgrading this section will enhance both safety and efficiency.

Improving safety and long-term resilience

The new bridges will offer improved structural integrity and modern design standards.

Moreover, the upgrades aim to:

  • Reduce congestion
  • Enhance driver safety
  • Support future traffic demand

Strategic investment in infrastructure

The project reflects broader efforts to modernize aging U.S. infrastructure.

By replacing outdated bridges, transportation agencies aim to ensure long-term reliability across key routes.

Outlook

As traffic volumes continue to grow, infrastructure upgrades like the I-95 Lake Marion project remain essential.

Once completed, the new bridges will strengthen a vital transportation link along the East Coast.
