Komatsu and Applied Intuition Announce Strategic Collaboration to Advance Software-Defined Autonomy in Mining

Komatsu Ltd. has announced a transformational technology collaboration with Applied Intuition, a Silicon Valley-based leader in vehicle intelligence, to co-develop a software-defined vehicle (SDV) and autonomy platform for Komatsu’s next generation mining equipment.

This initiative, one of the most significant technology programs in Komatsu’s history, is designed to accelerate mining innovation by combining Komatsu’s off-highway expertise with Applied Intuition’s AI-driven autonomy stacks and software platforms. Together, the companies aim to deliver real-time adaptability, boost productivity, minimize downtime, and enable safer, more efficient mining operations.

The unified platform will act as the central brain of Komatsu’s mining equipment, featuring:

  • Software-defined vehicle architecture supporting continuous updates, integrated data management, and secure connected services.
  • Flexible autonomy capabilities, from operator-assist to full autonomy, adaptable across fleets, commodities, and mine complexities.
  • Embedded AI and machine learning for continuous functional improvements, site-specific optimization, and scalable deployment.

“Komatsu is committed to creating value together with our customers, and this collaboration represents a step change in how we bring innovative, high-performance technology to their operations,” said Peter Salditt, President of Komatsu’s Mining Business Division and CEO of Komatsu Mining Technologies.

Applied Intuition co-founder and CEO Qasar Younis emphasized the industry impact: “The mining industry is one of the most regulated in the world. As the bar rises around emissions, human safety and geopolitics, Applied Intuition and Komatsu are building the next generation of mining products to redefine software-driven equipment.”

The collaboration directly supports Komatsu’s vision of fully autonomous mining operations, addressing challenges such as labor shortages, rising demand for minerals, and the need for more sustainable solutions. With the SDV and autonomy platform, Komatsu expects customers to gain enhanced performance, reduced operating costs, and future-ready adaptability across global mining sites.

Together, Komatsu and Applied Intuition are setting the foundation for mining machines that think, learn, and evolve, unlocking long-term value for customers and shaping the future of sustainable, intelligent mining.
