Liebherr 280 HC-L Cranes Support Triangle Building Progress

Four Liebherr 280 HC-L luffing jib cranes are playing a central role in the construction of the Triangle building, one of the most visually striking projects currently rising in the heart of Paris. Developed by construction group BESIX with crane expertise from HEXAGone Services, the project showcases how advanced lifting technology can meet the challenges of dense urban construction and complex architectural form.

Designed by renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron, the Triangle building features a distinctive pyramid-like geometry, measuring 180 meters in length and just 35 meters wide. This unconventional shape, combined with tight site constraints in central Paris, has required highly adaptable crane solutions. To meet these demands, four Liebherr 280 HC-L luffing jib cranes have been deployed on site.

Two of the cranes are mounted on portal bases and are designed to climb externally along the structure as construction progresses, reaching hook heights of 187 meters and 152 meters. The remaining two cranes are installed on foundation anchors, with tower heights of 85.5 meters and 95.7 meters respectively. This configuration allows continuous, efficient lifting operations while minimizing disruption in the surrounding urban environment.

The Liebherr 280 HC-L cranes are particularly well suited for large-scale city projects. With a maximum lifting capacity of up to 28 tonnes, a compact slewing radius of just 7.5 meters, and a minimal out-of-service position, the cranes can operate safely and efficiently in confined spaces—an essential requirement in densely built-up areas like Paris.

Beyond its construction complexity, the Triangle project is envisioned as a vibrant mixed-use destination. Once complete, the building will include a hotel, offices, co-working spaces, retail outlets, a cultural center, healthcare facilities, and a nursery. The development also supports Paris’s environmental goals through energy-efficient systems, renewable energy integration, and low-carbon mobility strategies.

The successful deployment of four Liebherr 280 HC-L cranes highlights the importance of close collaboration between designers, contractors, and equipment specialists. Together, BESIX, HEXAGone Services, and Liebherr are demonstrating how cutting-edge crane technology can support ambitious architectural visions and help deliver one of Europe’s most remarkable construction projects.
