Liebherr to Supply Propane-Based HVAC Systems for ÖBB’s New FLIRT Akku Battery Trains

Liebherr-Transportation Systems has been commissioned by Stadler Bussnang AG to supply propane-based HVAC systems for a new fleet of FLIRT Akku battery-electric multiple unit (BEMU) trains destined for the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). The environmentally friendly trains are expected to enter service in 2028, gradually replacing portions of ÖBB’s existing diesel fleet.

Under the agreement, Liebherr will provide heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) units using propane (R290) as a natural refrigerant. The initial delivery of the systems—three passenger saloon units and two driver’s cab units per train—will begin this summer. In total, Liebherr will equip 16 three-car FLIRT Akku trains, each offering seating for 160 passengers.

Designed for non-electrified and partially electrified routes, the battery-powered trains will primarily serve Lower Austria’s Kamptalbahn line, improving efficiency and reducing emissions.

We are very thankful for the trust Stadler Bussnang has placed in us. With our propane-based HVAC system, we offer an efficient solution for sustainable mobility. As an Austrian-based company, we look forward to supporting customers and operators in applying and servicing propane-based HVAC systems,” said Roland Friedrich, Global Key Account Manager for Stadler at Liebherr.

The propane-based HVAC technology delivers maximum cooling performance with minimal energy consumption while complying with strict safety requirements, including those related to the flammability of refrigerants. Propane (R290) serves as a natural, eco-friendly alternative to conventional refrigerants such as R134, offering a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just three, making it a key contributor to reducing climate impact.

By combining Stadler’s advanced train design with Liebherr’s sustainable HVAC innovation, the project represents a significant step toward cleaner, more efficient rail transport in Austria.
