ACCIONA Energía has begun injecting renewable electricity into the grid from its Logrosan biomass plant in Cáceres, marking a major milestone in Spain’s renewable energy transition. With an installed capacity of 50 MW, the facility is expected to generate around 380 GWh of electricity annually, avoiding more than 187,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
The emissions reduction achieved by the plant is equivalent to removing approximately 60,000 internal combustion engine vehicles from the road or planting around 9,000 trees annually. The project reinforces biomass as a key contributor to decarbonisation while supporting grid stability through continuous, dispatchable power generation.
The Logrosan plant will consume an estimated 275,000 metric tonnes of biomass per year, primarily sourced from forestry residues. This process supports active forest management by reducing excess biomass, thereby lowering the risk and intensity of wildfires in the surrounding region.
ACCIONA Energía was awarded the contract for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the plant by Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge under the third renewable energy auction. The award guarantees a fixed sale price for the electricity generated over a 20-year period, providing long-term investment certainty.
Positive Socio-Economic Impact
Beyond clean energy generation, the Logrosan biomass plant delivers significant socio-economic benefits. During construction, the project created more than 400 jobs, while ongoing operations will sustain around 30 direct jobs. In addition, over 900 contractors and small and medium-sized enterprises from the agroforestry and transport sectors will participate across the value chain.
Approximately 200 direct jobs are linked to the recovery of forestry waste, prunings, and scrubland. This workforce is effectively equivalent to employing 200 full-time “forest firefighters” dedicated to year-round forest management and wildfire prevention activities in the region.
The plant also acts as a driver of rural economic revitalisation. Around one-third of the income generated by the facility will be reinvested locally through services, employment, and procurement, providing a much-needed industrial stimulus in an area affected by depopulation and limited economic alternatives.
ACCIONA Energía has further strengthened its local engagement through complementary initiatives, including support for the Del Campo San Mateo olive oil cooperative, installation of a photovoltaic self-consumption system at a livestock cooperative, and financial assistance to help biomass suppliers acquire machinery.
Industry Leadership in Biomass Energy
With more than 25 years of experience in the biomass sector, ACCIONA Energía operates across the entire value chain, from plant design and construction to operation, maintenance, and fuel supply management. The company’s expertise is supported by long-standing supplier relationships, advanced digital monitoring systems, predictive diagnostics, boiler optimisation technologies, and high-efficiency emissions control systems.
ACCIONA Energía was among the pioneers of biomass power generation in southern Europe, commissioning the Sangüesa plant (30 MW) in 2002, followed by facilities in Briviesca (16 MW) and Miajadas (15 MW). The Logrosan project further consolidates its leadership in delivering sustainable, low-carbon energy solutions with strong local impact.
