Taichung, Taiwan — International architecture firm MVRDV has received construction permission for its latest residential project, “The Island”, a 21-storey tower designed to bring nature, sustainability, and communal living into the heart of the city. Located at the border between Taichung’s North District and Beitun District, the project aims to create a green urban oasis within a densely developed commercial neighborhood.
A Design Inspired by Nature
“The Island” takes on an organic architectural expression, with soft curves, large balconies, and abundant greenery covering its façade. Inspired by the artistic work of Antoni Gaudí, the exterior features a mosaic of irregular ceramic tiles, allowing the curves to flow naturally while giving the building a lively and artistic character.
Residential & Communal Spaces
The building will feature:
- 76 apartments aimed at middle-class residents and young couples
- Two commercial floors at the base of the tower
- A communal dining room, lounge, and karaoke space
- Five communal balconies across 21 floors
- A shared rooftop garden terrace with a multifunctional green crown
- Strong emphasis on social interaction and outdoor living
Green Vertical Landscape
To align with Taichung’s liveable building regulations, which promote outdoor space and greenery, the design includes:
- 104 private balconies with planted areas
- 38 dedicated façade planters
- Street-level planting
- A rich selection of plants inspired by the biodiversity of Taichung province
The goal is to transform the building into a vertical green habitat, offering residents views of nature while improving air quality and enhancing urban liveability.
Sustainability & Material Reuse
Currently, the site hosts an outdated 13-storey building that does not meet recent earthquake regulations. Instead of discarding the materials during demolition, MVRDV plans to reuse parts of the existing structure, including salvaging stones from walls and floors to incorporate into the new building’s finishes. This approach reduces carbon emissions and construction waste, reinforcing the project’s sustainable vision.
Architectural Expression
The unique ceramic mosaic façade enables smooth curves and easy maintenance. By using varying shades of white and different tile sizes, the design creates a dynamic visual texture while ensuring durability and long-term upkeep. This combination of craftsmanship and sustainability forms the core identity of “The Island”—a modern residential landmark shaped by nature.
