Saint-Gobain, a global leader in sustainable construction, has announced plans to launch its first low-carbon stone wool insulation plant in the United Kingdom. Set to be operational by 2027, the facility will be established in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, on a site owned by the Group.
This pioneering plant will initially produce 50,000 tonnes of high-performance stone wool insulation annually, with the capacity to double production to 100,000 tonnes in the future. It will feature state-of-the-art manufacturing technology, including a fully electric furnace powered by renewable energy, making it one of the most sustainable insulation production sites in Europe.
The plant is designed to support the growing UK market demand for both stone wool insulation and low-carbon construction solutions. By significantly reducing the Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon footprint of insulation materials, it aligns with the UK’s decarbonization goals and contributes to reducing embodied carbon in building projects.
The investment enhances Saint-Gobain’s position as a leading provider of integrated building envelope solutions in the UK, combining its existing product lines like plasterboard, construction chemicals, glazing, and structural systems.
This initiative also underscores the Group’s firm commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The announcement comes as Saint-Gobain prepares to celebrate its 360th anniversary in 2025, continuing its mission of “Making the World a Better Home.”
