Skanska, a leading global construction and development firm, has announced the successful completion of the $71 million Undergraduate Science Laboratory Building at Virginia Tech, further strengthening the university’s capacity to support its rapidly growing STEM enrollment.
The four-story, 102,746-square-foot facility is designed to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, offering 26 adaptable specialty laboratories that serve multiple colleges across the university, including:
- College of Science
- College of Engineering
- College of Natural Resources and Environment
- College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Beyond the labs, the building includes general classrooms, collaborative study spaces, and dedicated graduate teaching assistant workspaces, creating an integrated academic environment tailored for innovation and student success.
“The completion of the Undergraduate Science Lab Building marks another proud chapter in our enduring relationship with Virginia Tech,” said Mark Balling, General Manager for Skanska USA Building’s Mid-Atlantic region.
“We’re proud to continue our shared vision to advance science education and create spaces that inspire learning and discovery for students and faculty for generations to come.”
In alignment with the Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment, the project is targeting LEED Silver certification, supporting sustainability goals through energy-efficient systems and environmentally conscious design. Skanska, known for its leadership in green construction, has committed to net-zero carbon emissions by 2045 across its entire value chain.
The firm’s partnership with Virginia Tech continues, as Skanska is currently constructing Mitchell Hall, a five-story engineering building poised to become one of the largest structures on the Blacksburg campus upon completion.
