Skanska Signs $116M Contract for Biotechnology Facility at University of Virginia

Charlottesville, Va. — September 2025 — Skanska has signed an additional contract worth USD 116 million (about SEK 1.2 billion) with the University of Virginia to advance construction of the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology at Fontaine Research Park in Charlottesville. The contract value will be included in Skanska USA’s Q3 2025 order bookings.

The five-story, 33,000-square-meter (354,000-square-foot) institute is set to become a state-of-the-art hub for translational research — the first of its kind in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Designed to accelerate breakthroughs in science and medicine, the facility will feature:

  • Flexible laboratory and support space
  • Expanded research facilities and core facilities
  • Dedicated areas for 100–150 researchers
  • Collaboration space for biotechnology companies

The Paul and Diane Manning Institute aims to strengthen Virginia’s leadership in biotechnology innovation and public-private research collaboration.

Construction began in December 2023 and is expected to be completed by Q4 2027.
