Stantec to Provide Design Services for €3.2 Billion Semiconductor Facility in Italy

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, along with its partner Drees & Sommer, has been selected to design Silicon Box’s €3.2 billion semiconductor assembly and test facility in Northern Italy. The state-of-the-art facility, scheduled to begin operations in 2028, will be located near Novara, Piedmont, and is expected to generate 1,600 new jobs in the region.

A Milestone in Europe’s Semiconductor Industry

Silicon Box’s new Italian facility will emulate its flagship plant in Singapore, which specializes in large-format panel-level semiconductor packaging solutions. This expansion aims to strengthen Europe’s semiconductor ecosystem and contribute to global supply chain resilience.

Leonard Castro, Executive Vice President for Buildings at Stantec, emphasized:

“The global market is looking for a more secure and robust electronics supply chain. Silicon Box’s expansion into Italy is a significant catalyst to this growing ecosystem in Europe.”

Scope of Stantec’s Design Services

Stantec will provide:

  • Architectural design for administration areas
  • Infrastructure planning and permitting services
  • Sustainability-focused design solutions to align with European environmental standards

Meanwhile, Drees & Sommer will handle:

  • Industrial engineering & structural design
  • Mechanical & electrical engineering
  • Clean room & dry room design for semiconductor production

Mike Han, Head of Business at Silicon Box, praised the collaboration:

“Stantec’s expertise in cutting-edge manufacturing and commitment to sustainable development make them the ideal partner for this expansion.”

Driving Innovation and Economic Growth in Italy

The new semiconductor facility will position Italy at the forefront of advanced manufacturing, supporting key industries such as:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Data Centers
  • Electric Vehicles (EVs)
  • Mobile & Wearable Technologies
  • Edge Computing & RF Power Amplifiers

This initiative aligns with both the Italian government’s industrial strategy and the European Commission’s goals to strengthen Europe’s semiconductor supply chain and reduce reliance on foreign markets.

A Global Expansion in Semiconductor & Renewable Technology

Stantec is leading several major advanced manufacturing projects, including:

  • Qcells Solar Power Manufacturing Facility ($2.5B investment to quadruple solar production capacity)
  • Form Factory 1 Battery Plant (mass-producing grid-scale iron-air batteries)
  • Agratas Battery Cell Manufacturing Facility (£4B battery plant)

A Commitment to Sustainable, Cutting-Edge Design

Stantec’s design for the Novara facility will focus on minimizing environmental impact, meeting the European Commission’s highest sustainability standards. The company remains dedicated to future-proofing infrastructure, tackling climate change, and driving technological innovation worldwide.
