Turner Unveils Net-Zero Energy, LEED Gold Behavioral and Social Sciences Building at Chico State

A Sustainable Landmark for California State University, Chico

Turner Construction Company has officially completed the Behavioral and Social Sciences Building at California State University, Chico, a 94,000-square-foot facility designed to advance sustainability and enhance student learning. As Chico State’s first net-zero energy building, it generates more renewable energy than it consumes and has earned LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Innovative Sustainable Features

The building integrates multiple eco-friendly technologies, including:

  • Solar panels for renewable energy generation
  • LED lighting for improved energy efficiency
  • Chilled beam cooling system to reduce energy consumption
  • Water-efficient infrastructure and native landscaping
  • Sustainably repurposed valley oak benches to minimize carbon footprint

Commitment to Green Construction

Turner prioritized sustainability during construction by implementing:

  • Smart building technology to optimize temporary heating
  • Renewable diesel to reduce carbon emissions and fuel consumption
  • Sensor deployment for improved air quality
  • Recycling 80 tons of drywall cutoffs, diverting waste from landfills

“This project is a testament to our commitment to sustainability,” said Jim Hull III, Turner’s Construction Executive. “Every element of this building was thoughtfully crafted to minimize environmental impact while fostering an exceptional learning environment for students.”

Designed as a multifunctional academic space, the Behavioral and Social Sciences Building includes:

  • Nine academic departments
  • A 130-seat lecture hall
  • 22 classrooms and five laboratories
  • Study and breakout areas
  • An indoor arboretum
  • Community Legal Information Clinic & Gender and Sexuality Equity Coalition
  • Love Bird coffee shop, founded by alumna Rebecca Turi
