voestalpine Powers Austria’s New Koralmbahn High-Speed Railway

Donawitz, Austria — [Date] — voestalpine Railway Systems, the global leader in complete rail infrastructure solutions, has played a central role in delivering Austria’s new Koralmbahn high-speed railway, which begins full operation in December. The company supplied the entire rail line—including the new 33-kilometer Koralm Tunnel, the longest railway tunnel ever built in Austria.

As part of this milestone project, voestalpine provided:

  • 290 kilometers of ultra-long premium rails
  • 235 high-tech turnout systems
  • Advanced locking and digital monitoring technologies

Ultra-Long Rails and Turnouts “Made in Austria”

The 120-meter rails, produced at voestalpine’s state-of-the-art rolling mill in Donawitz, are designed for speeds of up to 250 km/h. These rails offer long service life, greater performance, and lower maintenance costs.

The turnout systems and monitoring technologies were developed and manufactured in Styria at the Zeltweg facility, with additional turnout production at Weichenwerk Wörth, a joint venture between voestalpine Railway Systems and ÖBB.

Digital Monitoring for Safe and Efficient Operations

voestalpine’s digital systems will provide continuous monitoring of the new line’s infrastructure, enabling:

  • real-time condition tracking,
  • predictive maintenance, and
  • enhanced safety for long-term operations.
