The Zwanenburg Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) has officially reopened following a major renovation and expansion project led by the Rijnland District Water Control Board in collaboration with BAM Energy & Water and partners. To celebrate the milestone, Rijnland hosted guided tours for stakeholders, highlighting the technical innovations, sustainable achievements, and importance of long-term partnerships.
At the Haarlem-Schalkwijk pumping station, visitors learned about its role in strengthening the regional water system, while in Zwanenburg they toured the fully upgraded treatment plant. The modernization ensures that the facility is ready to meet future demands in wastewater management and environmental sustainability.
Ready for the Future
High Water Authority Harry Kortman emphasized the importance of the upgrade:
“With the expansion and renovation of the treatment plant, we are able to treat and transport more wastewater. Treating wastewater at a single location makes the process more sustainable. Following the renovation, energy consumption will be reduced by 15%. In addition, the increased treatment capacity aligns with the expected population growth in the region.”
The project also prepares for a more sustainable sludge treatment process. In the coming years, sludge from Zwanenburg will be processed at the Haarlem Waarderpolder treatment plant, where it will be converted into biogas, supporting Rijnland’s commitment to circular, climate-friendly solutions.
Successful Collaboration
The project reflects the strength of collaboration between multiple partners.
Rolf te Velde, CEO of BAM Energy & Water, said:
“The water transition requires vision, decisiveness and collaboration. We are incredibly pleased and proud to have contributed to the AWS Zwanenburg project. In a complex environment, we installed new transport and sludge pipelines that ensure efficient wastewater treatment and a sustainable future for residents in the Zwanenburg, Haarlem and Heemstede region.”
