ICON Unveils Affordable 3D-Printed Homes in Austin’s Mueller Community

AUSTIN, Texas –In a transformative move for urban housing, ICON, the trailblazer in 3D printing construction technology, has launched three affordable, one-bedroom 3D-printed homes in the vibrant Mueller neighborhood of Austin. These homes are part of the Mueller Affordable Homes Program, offering housing opportunities to income-qualified individuals and advancing the city’s goal for inclusive, sustainable living.

Designed by the Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, these 650 sq. ft. residences exemplify innovation in both architecture and technology. Each home maximizes interior space with a seamless open-plan layout combining the living, dining, and kitchen areas on the ground floor, while the upper level hosts a cozy bedroom and bath. The designs are finished with standing seam roofs, private entrances, and quality materials, offering a blend of affordability and style.

ICON’s advanced 3D printing construction method enables faster and more precise builds, reducing construction timelines and improving energy efficiency. The 3D-printed wall systems offer high insulation, effectively regulating temperatures in both hot summers and chilly winters. In addition to being energy-efficient, these homes are built to withstand water, mold, termites, and fire, enhancing long-term durability.

The homes are located in the newest section of the centrally located Mueller community, within walking distance of parks, retail outlets, restaurants, and greenbelt views. As part of Mueller’s master plan, this development contributes to the neighborhood’s 6,900 planned homes, including over 1,725 affordable units.

The Mueller Affordable Homes Program, guided by the Mueller Foundation and administered by HomeBase Texas, offers homeownership opportunities to individuals earning up to 80% of Austin’s median family income. A unique “Workforce Housing” category is also available for those earning up to 120% of the MFI. This initiative ensures that long-time residents and workers in Austin can continue to live in a city where housing prices are rapidly rising.

“This is about creating resilient, dignified housing solutions for real people,” said Jared Kuhn, ICON’s VP of Real Estate Development and Sales. “We are proud to support Austin’s housing goals through cutting-edge technology and community partnerships.”

By combining affordability, sustainable technology, and thoughtful design, ICON’s project sets a new precedent in addressing the global housing crisis—starting with meaningful change in its hometown.
