SOM Unveils Strategic Vision Plan for APEC 2027 Summit in Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc, Vietnam – Global architecture and planning firm SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) has delivered the Strategic Vision Plan for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2027 Summit, transforming nearly 78 hectares of Phu Quoc’s southern coastline into a world-class civic and cultural destination.

At the heart of this ambitious project is the creation of an iconic APEC Multifunctional Complex, set to host 15,000 attendees from 21 member economies, and serve as the centerpiece for high-level diplomatic engagements during the summit. The site will be anchored by APEC Boulevard—a ceremonial arrival corridor and future mobility spine, enriched with lush streetscapes, flexible civic spaces, and transit-ready infrastructure.

The surrounding masterplan includes over 2 kilometers of new public waterfront, featuring plazas, promenades, and terraces that connect vibrant retail, food, and cultural venues. Central to this is APEC Park, a signature open-air venue envisioned for performances, exhibitions, and community gatherings—designed for both the summit’s duration and long-term public use.

SOM’s design emphasizes legacy and resilience, supporting Vietnam’s long-term economic, environmental, and urban development goals. The complex includes:

  • a state-of-the-art conference and exhibition center;
  • a multi-purpose arena for cultural and artistic events;
  • and a mixed-use landmark tower integrated with waterfront promenades and public spaces.

With APEC 2027 marking Vietnam’s third time as host, the project aims to position Phu Quoc as a premier tourism and economic hub in the Asia-Pacific. To facilitate global access, major infrastructure upgrades are underway, including expansions of Phu Quoc International Airport and An Thoi International Port, which will enable the island to receive the world’s largest cruise ships and streamline air connectivity.

Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of the Board at Sun Group, emphasized the significance of the development, stating, “APEC 2027 will be a major milestone, driving Phu Quoc’s emergence as a leading tourism and economic hub.”

SOM’s comprehensive vision not only addresses the immediate needs of APEC 2027 but lays the foundation for a lasting urban legacy that will elevate Phu Quoc on the global stage.
