Beijing / Pilbara | February — XCMG Group and Fortescue have launched the world’s largest all-electric mining equipment, unveiling two industry-first prototypes that signal a major shift toward zero-emission operations in large-scale mining.
The launch took place on February 3, when Fortescue Co-CEO Greg and his delegation visited XCMG to witness the debut of the largest all-electric wheel loader and the largest all-electric wheel dozer ever developed. The machines are designed to support 70–130-ton mining trucks while delivering high-performance, zero-carbon operations.
A milestone in zero-emission mining
The prototypes are the first tangible outcomes of a zero-emission equipment supply framework signed between XCMG and Fortescue. Under the agreement, XCMG will supply more than 100 zero-emission heavy mobile machines to Fortescue’s Pilbara mining operations in Western Australia.
“These custom-built prototypes mark a new milestone in our collaboration,” said Lu Chuan, President of XCMG Machinery. “By leveraging our full value chain — from R&D and manufacturing to service and finance — XCMG is committed to supporting Fortescue’s projects and advancing global green mining.”
Designed for scale and sustainability
The newly launched all-electric mining equipment has been engineered specifically for high-demand mining environments, combining large payload capacity with zero tailpipe emissions. The machines are expected to play a critical role in reducing operational emissions while maintaining productivity in some of the world’s most demanding mining conditions.
During the visit, the Fortescue delegation also toured XCMG’s Mining Machinery Division, inspecting additional project-specific equipment, including the world’s largest electric mining water truck, the XDE150ES.
Next steps: on-site trials in Australia
Following initial testing in China, the equipment will be shipped to Australian mining sites for on-site trials and performance optimisation. These trials will assess operational efficiency, durability, and integration into Fortescue’s existing mining fleet.
The collaboration reflects Fortescue’s broader strategy to eliminate operational emissions and accelerate the adoption of zero-emission technologies across its global mining operations.
Industry impact
As mining companies face increasing pressure to decarbonise, partnerships like this highlight how manufacturers and operators are working together to bring scalable, all-electric mining equipment from concept to real-world deployment.
With large-scale trials set to begin in Australia, the XCMG–Fortescue partnership is expected to influence future investment and adoption of zero-emission mining machinery worldwide.
