AECOM, the trusted global infrastructure leader, has been appointed as the dams engineering services provider for Seqwater’s Dam Improvement Program—a critical initiative to safeguard the long-term water security and resilience of South East Queensland, one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions. This appointment continues AECOM’s decades-long partnership with Seqwater, the region’s bulk water authority.
As part of this program, AECOM will lead major engineering services on the region’s three key gated dams—Wivenhoe, Somerset, and North Pine. The scope includes support for technical planning and design activities to deliver:
- The Detailed Business Case (DBC) for Somerset Dam, with enabling works scheduled to begin in 2025.
- The DBC for North Pine Dam, with staged strengthening works commencing this year.
- The Options Analysis (OA) for the Wivenhoe Dam upgrade, informed by geotechnical investigations completed in late 2024.
“Together with Seqwater, AECOM is committed to ensuring South East Queensland’s dams can continue to withstand extreme weather events,” said Beverley Stinson, Chief Executive of AECOM’s global Water business. “Our teams bring the full depth of our global capabilities to ensure these systems remain safe, resilient, and reliable for generations.”
This role builds on AECOM’s ongoing contributions to dam safety and improvement in the region, including projects at Hinze Dam and Lake Macdonald.
“Our long-standing relationship with Seqwater has been pivotal,” added Mark McManamny, CEO of AECOM’s Australia and New Zealand region. “We’re excited to continue supporting their vision for a sustainable future.”
Seqwater, which provides safe and secure bulk water to over 3.8 million people, owns and operates 26 dams. The planned upgrades to its three largest dams will ensure they meet modern engineering and safety standards, with benefits in flood mitigation and climate resilience.
With a strong legacy in delivering sustainable water infrastructure, AECOM’s involvement in this program underscores its ongoing commitment to shaping a more secure, climate-adapted future for South East Queensland.
