Chile’s Ultraport Launches Emissions Reduction Initiative with Konecranes Reach Stackers

Ultraport, a leading port operator in Chile, has taken a significant step toward sustainability by deploying two Konecranes SMV 4632 TC5 reach stackers equipped with Flow Drive technology at the Puerto Angamos terminal, a key hub for the nation’s copper exports. This initiative marks the introduction of Flow Drive lift trucks to Latin America, aligning with Ultraport’s commitment to reducing emissions in port operations.

Flow Drive Technology: A Game-Changer for Emissions and Efficiency

Flow Drive, an innovation by Konecranes, features a hydromechanical variable transmission (HVT) that reduces power consumption at low speeds. This not only cuts fuel usage by up to 25% compared to traditional diesel configurations but also minimizes wear and emissions without compromising performance.

The new lift trucks come with advanced features that enhance safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency:

  • Hydraulic Long Life (HLL) Filter: Extends oil change intervals, reducing waste.
  • Automated Central Greasing: Decreases mechanical wear and maintenance needs.
  • Enhanced Visibility: Two spreader cameras and one rear camera improve operational safety and precision.
  • TRUCONNECT® Remote Monitoring: Provides real-time diagnostics to optimize performance.
  • Premium Upgrade with Tire Pressure Monitoring: Improves stability, cuts fuel use, and extends tire lifespan.

Ultraport’s Sustainability Vision

Nelson Ojeda, Manager of Ultraport Angamos, emphasized the strategic importance of Puerto Angamos to Chile’s economy and Ultraport’s commitment to sustainable practices. “Puerto Angamos is the ideal location to kick-start our emissions reduction program, demonstrating our responsibility to foster sustainability in the region,” he said.

A Longstanding Partnership with Konecranes

Ultraport, part of Ultramar, has been a loyal Konecranes customer for over a decade. Their fleet includes over 30 reach stackers and several mobile harbor cranes operating across Chile. Ultramar also installed Konecranes Rail-Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes, the first of their kind in South America, at Terminal Graneles del Norte (TGN).

Andres Ramirez, Sales Manager at Konecranes Lift Trucks, highlighted the collaboration’s impact: “Ultraport’s trust in Konecranes’ expertise and technology made Flow Drive the natural choice for advancing their emissions initiative. Working with Trex, our local distributor, ensures the delivery of innovative, sustainable solutions tailored to their needs.”

Konecranes and Ecolifting™

This deployment aligns with Konecranes’ Ecolifting™ vision, which seeks to maximize the environmental benefits of their product portfolio while helping customers minimize their carbon footprints. Through eco-optimized diesel drives, hybrid systems, and fully electric fleets, Konecranes continues to lead the way in sustainable material handling solutions.

Konecranes’ focus on digitalization, decarbonization, and circularity cements its position as an industry leader, advancing safer, more efficient material flows while contributing to a sustainable economy.
