Compact and Powerful: Hack Brings in Reinforcements with the LTM 1650-8.1

Hack Schwerlastservice GmbH has expanded its fleet with the Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1, a 700-tonne mobile crane that delivers unparalleled power and versatility in a compact eight-axle design. This addition now ranks as the most powerful crane in Hack’s arsenal, acquired as a low-hour, young used machine due to its immediate availability—a crucial factor for meeting current project demands.

“The LTM 1650-8.1 is the market’s most compact and powerful 700-tonne mobile crane on eight axles,” says Udo Hack, owner of Hack Schwerlastservice. “We had several urgent projects requiring this class of crane, and waiting for a new unit was not an option. Liebherr offered us a well-maintained, barely-used unit that arrived quickly—and we’ve had no regrets.”

Ready for Any Challenge

With its wide range of boom and jib configurations, the LTM 1650-8.1 is engineered for a broad spectrum of heavy lifting tasks: from bridge construction and dismantling to ship loading, precast concrete handling, and wind turbine assembly and maintenance. Its versatility and strength make it an ideal choice for Hack’s diverse portfolio of lifting operations.

First Mission: Lifting History

The crane’s debut assignment took place in Wetzlar, where Hack was tasked with dismantling a 50-meter-long, 4-meter-wide pedestrian bridge over the River Lahn in Naunheim. Built in 1906, the bridge was decommissioned due to safety concerns and cleared to make way for a new structure.

The LTM 1650-8.1, operated by veteran crane driver Gerhard Mees, was outfitted with 155 tonnes of counterweight. At a working radius of 35.8 meters, it smoothly lifted the 27.5-tonne bridge section that had been pre-cut using torches.

“The crane was set up quickly, and the lifts were incredibly smooth,” notes Mees. “At that radius, it could’ve lifted up to 42 tonnes. It’s as strong as an ox and as precise as a racehorse. Truly impressive.”

Building a Legacy with Liebherr

Founded in 1959 by Werner Hack Sr. and Apollonia Hack, Hack Schwerlastservice GmbH has grown from a family-run local operation to a prominent heavy lifting and logistics provider across western Germany. The company maintains branches from Düsseldorf and Eifel to Westerwald and Frankfurt, offering services including:

  • Mobile and construction crane hire
  • Towing and recovery
  • Industrial assembly with electric cranes
  • Work platforms
  • Specialized heavy transport and logistics

The Hack fleet now comprises over 36 mobile cranes, the majority of which are Liebherr models—a reflection of the company’s longstanding partnership with the Ehingen-based manufacturer.

With this latest addition, Hack Schwerlastservice not only reinforces its lifting capacity but also strengthens its ability to deliver high-performance, precision-driven solutions in time-sensitive environments.
