SOM Unveils Nature-Inspired Mixed-Use Tower in Taipei’s Cultural District

Taipei, Taiwan – Global architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has revealed its design for a striking new mixed-use development in the heart of Taipei City, set to become a prominent new landmark in the city’s fast-growing Nangang cultural district.

Named the Taiwan Power Nangang Development, the tower will sit adjacent to the Taipei Music Center, reinforcing the neighborhood’s identity as a cultural and creative hub. SOM’s design seamlessly integrates planted public spaces, retail outlets, and wellness-focused office environments, anchoring a vibrant new chapter for the district.

A Vertical Garden in the City

Drawing inspiration from Taiwan’s terraced tea plantations, the design introduces a series of cantilevered, planted balconies along the façade, providing occupants with a natural, calming connection to the outdoors.

“In addition to new public spaces for all visitors to enjoy, we’ve designed a workplace that prioritizes health and wellness through natural ventilation and garden terraces,” said Michael Duncan, Design Partner at SOM. “These are qualities that are uncommon for high-rise buildings in Taipei.”

The high-performance façade of the tower maximizes natural daylight and ventilation, while its geometry and overhangs help reduce solar gain, contributing to energy efficiency and occupant comfort in Taipei’s humid subtropical climate.

A Vision for Health, Community, and Culture

The project’s mix of uses and attention to human-centric design reflects a larger shift in how cities are rethinking their dense urban cores post-pandemic. SOM’s vision promotes well-being, ecological integration, and civic engagement, offering:

  • Terraced gardens on multiple levels for workplace wellness
  • Flexible, open-plan office spaces with panoramic city views
  • Retail space integrated with lushly landscaped public areas
  • A new urban landmark next to a major cultural institution

As Taipei continues to evolve its identity on the world stage, developments like the Taiwan Power Nangang project signal the city’s ambition to pair sustainability and design innovation with cultural growth and community enrichment.
