ACCIONA Living & Culture Launches ‘The Key Book of Museums’ Showcasing Global Sustainability Best Practices

To celebrate World Book Day, ACCIONA Living & Culture has unveiled El Libro Clave de los Museos (The Key Book of Museums), a groundbreaking new publication that compiles some of the most innovative sustainability initiatives from more than 150 museums around the world.

This unique project is the result of extensive research that identified 33 impactful initiatives with proven social and environmental benefits—from carbon footprint reduction and circular economy practices to inclusive, community-focused programs.

“This book is more than just a list of best practices,” said a spokesperson for ACCIONA Living & Culture. “It’s a call to action, inviting cultural institutions to embrace their role in shaping a more sustainable and equitable future.”

A Practical Guide for Museums of All Sizes

Organized into easy-to-navigate fact sheets, the book provides:

  • Key data and real-world examples of sustainable practices
  • Applicable insights for both large, international museums and small, specialized institutions
  • A roadmap for integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into daily operations

Participating museums include high-profile institutions like the Grand Egyptian Museum and Panama Biomuseum, as well as acclaimed regional venues such as Tate Modern and the Ghent Design Museum.

  • Use of recycled, organic, and low-emission construction materials
  • Implementation of nature-based solutions (green roofs, biodiversity islands)
  • Water footprint reduction and energy-efficient lighting and cooling systems
  • Inclusive design, accessibility, and community collaboration
  • Transparent reporting and impact measurement

Global Launch During NEXT IN Summit

The book’s launch coincides with the NEXT IN Summit in Madrid, a global forum that brings together leading museum professionals, artists, and architects to explore the future of culture and sustainability.

The Key Book of Museums will be available starting May 7, 2025, in specialized bookstores across Spain and internationally, and online via platforms such as Amazon and La Fábrica.
