ACCIONA Energía GrafTech Solar System Overview

ACCIONA Energía GrafTech Solar System Overview

Navarra, Spain – ACCIONA Energía has completed the installation of an on-site photovoltaic system at the production facility of GrafTech International in Ororbia, Navarra, supporting the manufacturer’s efforts to reduce emissions and transition to renewable energy.

The solar installation, which became operational in mid-February 2026, has a capacity of 1.56 MWp and is expected to generate around 2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity annually. The electricity produced will be consumed entirely within the industrial site due to the facility’s high energy demand, meaning no power will be exported to the grid.

Long-term renewable energy partnership

The project is based on a 15-year on-site Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) structured under an energy-as-a-service model. Under this arrangement, ACCIONA Energía finances, installs, operates and maintains the solar system, while GrafTech International secures long-term access to renewable electricity without making an upfront capital investment.

This model allows the graphite materials manufacturer to optimize energy costs while advancing its decarbonization strategy.

Solar installation across industrial infrastructure

The ACCIONA Energía GrafTech solar system spans approximately 11,500 square metres, using the rooftops of industrial buildings and parking canopies within the facility.

More than 2,300 high-efficiency bifacial solar modules have been installed. These panels generate electricity from both sides, improving energy yield compared with conventional solar modules. The system uses multiple mounting structures to maximize space and solar exposure across the site.

As part of the project, ACCIONA Energía also replaced a fiber cement roof with corrugated metal sheeting, supporting GrafTech International’s phased plan to eliminate the material from its facilities.

Supporting industrial decarbonization

The new solar installation strengthens GrafTech’s broader sustainability strategy, which focuses on improving energy efficiency, reducing emissions and increasing the use of renewable electricity within its industrial operations.

For ACCIONA Energía, the project reinforces its position as a partner for industrial decarbonization, providing renewable energy solutions that help manufacturers reduce their environmental footprint while maintaining operational efficiency.

As industries across Europe accelerate their transition toward cleaner energy sources, projects such as the ACCIONA Energía GrafTech solar system highlight the growing role of on-site renewable generation in transforming industrial energy consumption.
