AECOM, a global infrastructure leader, has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, to provide environmental compliance support and prepare the programmatic NEPA Environmental Impact Statement for the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub. This initiative is part of the DOE’s $7 billion Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs Program (H2Hubs), which aims to decarbonize key economic sectors through the development of regional clean hydrogen hubs nationwide.
Advancing Clean Energy and Decarbonization
“AECOM stands as one of the world’s largest clean energy design and environmental engineering firms. Through our Sustainable Legacies strategy, we continue to drive industry-leading innovations in decarbonization,” said Jennifer Obertino, Senior Vice President, Global Energy Practice Leader at AECOM. “We look forward to applying our expertise in environmental planning and permitting to help the DOE advance CO2 reductions and implement next-generation hydrogen technologies.”
The Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub will serve as a catalyst for a hydrogen ecosystem, enhancing energy security and job growth in the region. The project aims to decarbonize major industries, including trucking, shipping, logistics, energy production, and transit, with proposed hub locations in Washington, Oregon, and Montana.
“We are honored to collaborate with the DOE to help realize the hydrogen infrastructure critical to a sustainable, decarbonized economy,” said Matt Crane, Chief Executive of AECOM’s U.S. West Region. “Our expertise in environmental impact assessments and leadership in the hydrogen market uniquely position us to drive the success of the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub.”
A Hydrogen-Powered Future
The Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub will establish a network of hydrogen producers, consumers, and connective infrastructure, positioning the region as a global energy innovation leader. By leveraging the region’s renewable resources, the hub will produce clean hydrogen, helping to lower costs and increase accessibility.
The DOE aims for the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub to cut 1.7 million metric tons of CO2 emissions annually—equivalent to removing 400,000 gasoline-powered cars from the road.
