Arup’s sustainable landscape design for Qianwan Park in Shenzhen has received global recognition, earning three prestigious awards: a Merit Award in the HKIUD GBA Urban Design Awards 2024, a Gold Award at the MUSE Design Awards, and the Winner in Landscape Architecture at the Built Design Awards. In addition, the project was shortlisted at the World Landscape Architecture Awards 2025 and the Asian Design Awards 2024, further cementing its status as an innovative benchmark in urban design.
Located on the west Shekou Peninsula, Qianwan Park spans 31.6 hectares, creating a seamless connection between Qianhai Bay to the west and the Dananshan mountains to the southeast. The design blends Lingnan traditions with modern sustainable practices, delivering a harmonious balance between urban life and natural beauty. With 71% green coverage, the park integrates diverse facilities for recreation, culture, education, and dining, while a 3 km riverfront and two landmark landscape footbridges enhance connectivity across the site.
Beyond its cultural and social value, the park establishes itself as a living carbon sink. Leveraging Arup’s Total Carbon App, the project follows a roadmap to carbon neutrality by 2035, with annual plant sequestration projected at 900 tCO2e. This nature-based, biodiversity-focused approach not only safeguards ecological value but also contributes actively to carbon mitigation.
These accolades highlight Arup’s leadership in sustainable landscape design, showcasing how Qianwan Park merges heritage, innovation, and resilience to serve as a model for future urban development worldwide.
