Building a Lasting Legacy Through New Zealand’s Largest Hospital Infrastructure Project

The New Dunedin Hospital project is set to become one of the most significant infrastructure developments in New Zealand’s history, delivering world-class healthcare facilities while creating a lasting legacy for the people of Dunedin and the wider South Island.

For CPB Contractors Project Manager Jason Tutty, the project carries strong personal meaning. Born and raised in Dunedin, Tutty brings more than 25 years of experience in New Zealand’s construction industry and sees the project as an opportunity to give back to the community that shaped his career.

The new hospital will serve not only Dunedin but a broader catchment extending from the Waitaki River south, including Central Otago. Beyond improving healthcare outcomes, the project is expected to generate substantial economic benefits for the Otago region through employment, local procurement, and long-term industry development.

As project manager, Tutty is responsible for the day-to-day planning and safe delivery of the hospital across multiple construction phases. However, his vision extends beyond project execution. He aims to leverage the scale and visibility of the development to attract new talent into the construction industry and to strengthen workforce capability through mentoring, training, and structured career development programs.

Community engagement is a central focus of the project. Working closely with Health New Zealand, CPB Contractors is actively engaging with local stakeholders, including iwi, community groups, and young people seeking career pathways in construction and engineering. The goal is to ensure the project delivers social value alongside physical infrastructure.

With deep-rooted relationships across Dunedin and the wider South Island, Tutty is also focused on building strong partnerships with subcontractors and suppliers. The project is being positioned as a learning platform for the regional supply chain, students, engineers, and emerging tradespeople, supporting the development of a skilled and resilient local workforce.

The New Dunedin Hospital stands as more than a major healthcare investment. It represents a commitment to community, capability building, and long-term regional growth, leaving a legacy that will benefit the people of the South for generations to come.
