Mohammed V International Airport is undergoing a major expansion with the construction of a new international terminal, expected to be completed before the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
The project forms part of Morocco’s national aviation development strategy aimed at modernizing airport infrastructure and preparing for a significant increase in international visitors during the tournament.
Major capacity expansion planned
The new terminal will significantly increase the airport’s capacity and strengthen Casablanca’s role as a major aviation hub connecting Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
Key features of the project include:
- Construction of a large new terminal complex
- Expansion of annual passenger capacity from around 15 million to nearly 35 million passengers
- Development of additional taxiways and airport infrastructure
- A new 42-meter air traffic control tower
The terminal itself is expected to add capacity for around 20 million additional passengers per year, making the airport one of the largest aviation gateways in North Africa.
Part of Morocco’s broader airport modernization plan
The Casablanca expansion is part of a wider national initiative to upgrade airport infrastructure across the country.
Other major airports expected to receive upgrades include facilities in:
- Marrakesh
- Agadir
- Tangier
- Fez
These improvements aim to accommodate the anticipated surge in tourists and football fans expected during the global tournament while supporting long-term tourism growth.
Integrated high-speed rail connectivity
A key element of the expansion includes integration with Morocco’s high-speed rail system, particularly the Al Boraq High-Speed Rail network.
This connection will allow passengers arriving at Mohammed V International Airport to travel quickly to major cities such as:
- Rabat
- Marrakesh
- Tangier
Strengthening Morocco’s aviation and tourism sector
Once completed, the Casablanca airport new terminal for the 2030 World Cup will play a key role in strengthening Morocco’s aviation capacity, improving passenger experience, and supporting the country’s ambition to become a major tourism and transport hub in North Africa.
